controls are backwards

i have just bought a boat and it has a 175 hp Johnson ocean runner outboard on it, and I took it out for the 1st time and when I put in in reverse gr it went forward, and also forward was reverse, I have no background of anything being done to this boat and am starting from scratch.

What's the model number of the engine?

Got a picture of the engine from the back showing the prop?

Not a pro here, but one thought I have is:
While unlikely, the simplest thing to check and costs no money, is to be sure you have the correct prop on it.
Normal rotation vs Counter rotating..

A counter rotating prop on a normal rotating engine will do what you describe for example..

as for FWD vs REV, easy to fix in the control binnacle.

Are you using an OMC control box? Some brands shift opposite.

A counter rotation prop perhaps?
