controls locking

77 Evinrude 140hp w/ side controls

When I push the control lever to forward from neutral it works fine. When I push a little more than half throttle, the gear shift linkage inside slips back a little and the 2 gears that mesh with the control plate inside the housing get "out of whack" and the controls will not go into neutral anymore. I have to disassemble the unit and remesh the gears together. This is very frustrating, almost like the engine is pulling the linkage back after going into gear. It doesn't do this in reverse. Thanks for the help. I can post a photo if needed of the gears I am talking about.

Re: controls locking

disconnect shift cable, manually put it in gear. if it stays, you need new cable, if not, probably a clutch dog.

I also have a 77 140hp evin. and lately I've been slipping out of gear. I suspect my clutch dog is going out and recently my control box is doing the same thing.

Re: controls locking

Well I changed both the throttle and gear shift cables. Was working fine and then BAM! The 3 tooth gear in the control box slipped "out of wack" now I have to disassemble and fix gear. Really getting tired of taking this thing apart. What is the "dog gear" and how difficult to change?

Re: controls locking

should I not put the engine in gear without it running. I think that is the problem. Maybe without that "stuff" turning in there that may be causing the problem. I just ran the engine, put it in gear and worked fine. anybody thoughts? thanks.
