Controls work backwards

Just hooked up a 60 Hp merc and I notice the controls work backwards.When you push the handle ahead the motor goes into reverse Full back is forward.How did this happen

tom<br /><br />Can you elaborate on "Hooked up" the motor? New remote control, removed lower unit. Ect? And what year is it?

Tom, The same thing happened to me when I had the lower unit off to fix the impeller. I found that there are two neutrals on the lower unit, and I had inadvertantly shifted into the "wrong" one. The cure is to drop the lower unit again, put both the motor and LU into neutral, and observe which way the upper shift shaft rotates when it goes into fwd. Make sure the LU goes into FWD in the same direction!
