Controls...

Ok finally finished my boat project.. Got everything together and ready for the water.. Only question I have is the throttle control and the forward/reverse controls seem backwards to me.. To increase throttle you pull back on the throttle lever.. and to put it in forward I have to pull it back also.. Is this normal?? It is a 1978 Evinrude 35 hp... I tried every which way possible to switch the controls, flip the box there in everything I can see to do.. Is this normal or do I have it backwards.. Thanks in advance

Re: Controls...

Sounds like you have the wrong control for that engine, Brandon. You need to use one made for that specific engine.

Re: Controls...

Those motors came with a control box that had 2 separate handles. One for throttle, one for shifting. Like this one, ebay item # 190095353121

Re: Controls...

post a picture of your control, some are convertible to the right or left side of the boat, sound like your is for the other side, may be able to convert.

load your pictures to photobucket, then clik the small box under the pictures you want to post, go to the bottom of the page, clik generate HTLM. it will go to another page, about the 3rd section down it will say thumb nails for message boards, clik the box, and copy. then when posting in the forum, at the end of the post just paste the HTML, and click add reply. this is the easiest way to post pictures

Re: Controls...

brandon, something just came to mind. possibly you have the cables on the wrong side of the engine or the controller. the black handle is the shift the red is the throttle, when you push the red forward, the cable should extend out on the engine end. on the shift lever you push it forward, and the cable should shorten on the engine end, pulling the engine shift lever forward. just a thought.

Re: Controls...

Ok so your saying that the red handle is the throttle control and the black one is the forward/reverse??? Because right now the black handle(smaller handle) is the throttle.. The red is the Transmission control.. If thats wrong how could they be switched?? The controls function just seem backwards.. Maybe I am not on the same page as ya.. Let me know if that helps..

Re: Controls...

exactly, who ever put the control and the cables together, put the wrong cable on the wrong lever. the lever function differently inside the box. when you move the red handle forward it should extend the throttle cable, pushing the engine connection, the shift cable works, when pushing black handle forward, it pulls the shifter on the engine, push the black back moves the shifter back to reverse. open the control box they are rather simple in side. just swap the cables. this should solve your problem.

take the controller and cables out of the boat, much easier to do on a table or bench. almost impossible to do in the boat.
