Convert 2 piece construction to 3 piece

I'm considering converting my scarab sport 302 from 2 piece to 3 piece and removing the cuddy cabin at the same time.

Looking for links of any builds/restos you may have seen where the builder cut the cap, reinforced it and extended the floor all the way to the hull. I think this must be possible but I have only seen a few threads where it has been successful.

I am wanting to do this because of a soft spot in the floor. I've seen a thread where a cuddy has been removed but the more research I can have done before I begin this summer would be great!

It's currently 2 piece construction, consisting of liner/cap and hull.

Would like to see more restos of folks who have cut into this liner/cap and end with a hull, deck (tabbed to hull), and reinforce what is left of cap.

Think that makes sense, I can link one of the threads I'm referring to in a moment.

I imagine it's similar in construction to my 1985 scarab 1? I looked before starting my project for others that were similar, but came up short, my plans are to keep it as close to original as possible though.

Nice thread! Similar boat only mine is CC, it does look like what I was talking about regarding the liner though. Smooth cuts! You use circular saw?

Yep, just a circular saw, quick and easy.

So have you considered extending the floor to add floor space or just planning to put the liner back in and blend it? You need to get back to work so I can see more progress and more ideas! :)

My plan is to return it to its original state, even if I were to extend the floor, the extra floor space would be almost unusable in my situation. Soon enough I be back at it! lol

Any other thoughts? Close to moving all in and would like a clearer game plan for myself. Anyone see concerns with changing the boats construction from a hull and liner to installing the new deck all the way to the edges of the hull and tabbing there? Will it make it too rigid or too flexible?

IMHO, The Engineers that Designed the hull/boat did so for a reason. It's never a good idea to make radical changes to this design. Personally I would not undertake what you are proposing. But, as I always say...It's your boat and you're free to do with it as you see fit.;)

I was hoping you would respond and greatly respect your opinion! Main reason(s) you wouldn't undertake? Please expand

If what you're saying is that your boat is constructed similar to a Boston Whaler and you want to convert it to a boat with Stringers and bulkheads then again I don't think the engineering is there. A hull designed to be "Foam Filled" supported is far different from one designed to be supported with Stringers and Bulkheads.

No sir that's not it at all. I would say its more like a... I don't know... But there are stringers and bulkheads but rather than have a floor tabbed to the hull on top of the stringers, it had what I assume was a cost saving way to build and an entire "liner" which is the cap and floor mounted over the top to connect to the hull. Essentially creating 2 pieces. I guess similar to a bass boat maybe? I want to make it more similar to something like a contender where there are three structural pieces instead of two. The hull, deck (tabbed to hull sides), and cap (with added knees). I think that makes sense. I'll try and post a few pics of what I'm trying to say. Thanks again for chiming in. I was hoping you would!

Wood, Have a look at the link above to my project, I'm pretty sure it's the same construction as mine. The cap has the floor of the boat and the bilge integrated into it.

It can be done, but nobody can tell you exactly what you'll need to do because it will depend on a few variables. The hull sides above the floor typically need some added stiffening, otherwise the gunnels may flex too much, not hard to do though. Sometimes the stiffening is from the shape of the cap (gunnel), other times it's from adding rod trays (shelves) or vertical rod holder brackets. From the floor down it won't be any different from stock.

I like this sort of construction better than a liner because you lose room and add weight with a liner, it's not as sexy though.

Yup, I totally understand "Tub" constructed Boats. What I'm Not totally understanding is exactly what you're wanting to do after the "Tub" is removed and the NEW construction begins. I THINK I have and Idea but I'm not totally certain. Some Drawings, no matter how primitive, would be of Great Assistance!!! After all, I AM just an..

Ha! Understood, I'll try to put something together and post it up tomorrow... I apologize ahead of time for my lack of drawing/design skill
