Convert 20" to 15" Shaft?

I have a 1984 35HP Evinrude 20" shaft. My father in law has a 1984 25HP Johnson. He's already harvested the bottom end for another motor but I was wondering if I could use the mid section from his parts motor to replace mine.

What all would be involved in there? I imagine some plumbing and I belive there is a spacer in the shaft that can be removed?

Anyone ever heard of something like this before. Just thinking of tinkering now...

The gearcases are different and the gearcase mounting patterns are different, therefore the midsections are different.
