Convert AQ130D fuel pump from mechanical to electric

My fuel pump physically broke on my boat yesterday evening on the lake. I pulled the fuel pump and found the arm was broken off that rides on the cam lobe. I need to find that missing arm still .. hopefully it is in the oil pan!

I have decided to install a electric fuel pump instead with oil pressure cutoff switch.

I have a few questions and need some advice on this.

I have read I need around 3psi of fuel pressure at the carbs ? Is that correct?

I found marine fuel pumps here:
http://www.marineengineparts.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/page81.html

One is a P74021 Universal LOw pressure fuel pump 3.5 to 5.5 PSI 20-30 GPH
and the safety cutoff switch is part number A68301 on the page.

Wil this work with my AQ130D ? Will any issues happen if I use electric I need to be aware of ?

Lastly how does the low oil pressure safety switch install ? In place of the oil pressure sending unit? (I think the sending unit is bad anyway as my gage does not work)

Thank you for your help..

does your starter have the secondary + contact on it? You may need to install a momentary switch to prime the systems after sitting for a long time.

Bomar76 .. Is there a way I can test the current sending unit ? It may be the gage that is bad .. the gage reads all the way over suggesting over current from the sending unit .. but that gage stays that way powered on or not ..

180shabah, I am pretty sure it does have the 2nd contact .. So I need to bypass the oil switch for starting to prime ? So when the starter is craking the pump will recieve power?

Then after the starter stops running the fuel pump will receive power via the switch if oil pressure is present ?

So is a 3.5 to 5 psi pump enough ?

Key on, remove wire at sending unit and ground it on an unpainted surfece. Gauge should peg.

The 3.5-5 psi electric pump is correct for a carbed engine, no fuel pressure regulator is needed.

If you follow the wiring diagram link I posted it clearly shows a solenoid connection in figure 5

Great. I will be ordering soon. I need to find a better fuel filter too.

You can find a used mechanical pump on ebay for 20 to 30 bucks. The pump from the inline 6 is also the same. Might want to consider that option before investing too much more.

I agree with PP40, even if you had to replace the diaphagm in a used one, it still might be less money and effort than trying to convert to electric.

Either way, let us know how it goes.:)

Something that hasn't been mentioned yet is the reason for the lever coming off the pump. I would think you would want to find out what happened and if there is any camshaft damage.

Your right PP40 .. I heard a rattle a few months before she died .. It looks like to me the arm failed from the screw that holds the arm falling out.. That was the screw I found in the Bilge .. It acts as a pin to hold the arm .. THe screw just vibrated loose and in turn the arm had nothing to hold it in ..

I am going to drain the oil and hopefully find that arm down in the oil pan.
If it is not there where would it be hiding ?

I am hoping it is down there in the pan.... Looks like it is a re-usable gasket too..

I think I am going the electric fuel pump route(I already ordered) I am replacing all the guages execpt for the tach as that is new already... I am installing a oil pressure safety switch and all new senders ...

I hope I get it ironed out before it gets to mush warmer out !

Re: Convert AQ130D fuel pump from mechanical to electric

I have it all hooked up I'm gettting fuel to the carbs ... It will idle ok but when I increase throttle it will not spit out any fuel until it is to late and the motor dies .. I can kind of goose it and get it to rev up and it will go wherevere I want RPM wise but if I try to hold it there it will not stay and dies off ..

Seems to me like the fuel pressure is low .... I have bypassed my filter and tested with same results ...

Should I by pass the oil pressure switch ? WOuld that cut the voltage down if it was defective ?

Thanks
