Convert I/O boat to an Outboard boat?

Hello all, I was wondering if it would be possible to convert an boat with an I/O to a boat with an outboard motor.... I like the bowrider look and feel and usefulness, but dislike the i/o setup...

I have the chance to get a i/o hull (in perfect shape) with a 3.7L merc in it for very cheap and was wondering if i could convert it

Thanks for the help,

Matt

I'd say anything is possible but what a lot of work! If you are determined to try, hop on over to the resto forum and you will encounter all sorts of talented people undertaking some truly impressive projects. Yours would not necessarily be out of place.

But...are there no ready-made outboard bow riders that you like the look of? It's about the most common configuration there is out there.

Better yet, if this particular boat is in great shape and a real bargain...buy it and try living with an I/O for a summer. There are worse fates...:D

I agree, it sounds like alot of work to convert. I'd just buy the boat at a steal, sell it for what it's really worth, and when you can't sell it for what you thought you could enjoy the I/O and tell everyone what a steal it was to preserve your dignity!!! LOL

Of course if you do sell it you can now buy an open bow with an outboard.

buying a bowrider with an outboard is the plan.... it is just that there arent many out there for sale.... also least in the 18' + range.

90% of the ones who have done the conversion, are not happy with the results. and outboard hull is built differently than an I/O hull. center of gravity is in different place.

I'm one of those.

Did the conversion on a 18' Starcraft. Made sense as I was pulling out a Stringer drive but ended up with a hooked hull.

Replaced the boat with a similar year Starcraft built for an O/B. Moved the motor across and am much happier with how the boat runs.

Even between these two, very similar boats, the hull is different. I could never get the motor low enough on the first hull. The prop vented at speed and never got past about 35 mph. Same motor on an O/B hull and I've got the motor raised up, hit 40 mph and rarely vent.

Just a thought- if money enters in to it all, a 3.7 Merc is prob 200+ HP. A sufficient outboard would likely be less fuel efficient and expenisve to purchase.
