I have an old MinnKota 28 lb Model 565 foot control. Can I convert to hand control? Will use on pond boat and will just need to cut on and off. Any ideas?

Many years ago I was on a fishing trip to an isolated lake in Mexico when the steering cables somehow gave out. There is a knob on top of the head that is supposed to point in the direction the motor is facing and the boat is moving. I removed the knob and somehow jury rigged something in the way of a handle (small vice grips?) on to the shaft that the knob fit on. By turning the handle I could steer the boat. I still used the electrical part of the foot control to start and stop the motor. When I got back to the states I went to the local hardware store and bought something with a chuck on it that would clamp on the shaft, (maybe some kind of a handle for a hand tap?) and used that for several months until I finally ordered the cables to put the motor back in operation the way it was intended to work. Maybe you can do something similar.
