convert throttle on '85 15 hp from gears to cable style

Anyone know if the gear throttle from the earlier Johnson 15/9.9 (1985 in this case) can be converted to the cable style throttle (1986 and later)? I need to replace the gear component of the throttle and figured I'd look into making this conversion. The part that the tiller handle connect to (vertical control shaft part 0325002 (1985) and 0331192 (1986)) look very similar. I think I would just need to replace the throttle handle but want to be sure this is possible before purchasing anything. Thanks for any insight.
