Is the ADI a much better ignition system than the distributor ignition on these inlines...can you convert to an ADI and if so what components do you have to change? Thanks!

A 100% dist ignition are very close to the later ADI ignition on reliability, but it needs some tlc...

Converting a dist engine to ADI can be done, but it's a big job and does require some $$ and knowhow.....

You will need to disassemble the engine ( replace the dist endcap with an ADI endcap ), a custom washer needs to be fabricated ( different height on the dist/ADI blocks ).
You will need a complete ADI ignition system ( 6 coils, trigger, stator, 2 switchboxes, mounting plate, some custom parts needed to be able to mount the plate + ADI flywheel .

+ you will need to fabricate some carb and ignitions advance linkage ..

It's better some do some maintenance on the good old distributor system:)

Mine is an Australian "distributor" one from 1978.

I have done 2 of them and they are a PITA. Both one's I did( "J" blocks) had to have the upper block machined down as it was to high, and making a custom ignition plate to mount packs as older block has no mounting bosses and lack clearance for cowl. Your have to move rectifier to front cowl bracket where old one was and extend wiring. They ran really good and I installed a spark advance box off a Xr2 on them to bump the timing.....:D It not worth it if its a stock block as you can find a ADI block pretty easy now.
