converting an i/o to an outboard

Hello. I was wondering about converting an older boat that had an i/o in it to an outboard. I saw an older checkmate that had a 120hp i/o in it. The motor is out of the boat and seeing as how you would replace the stringers, floor, and transom. Why not put an outboard on the back with the same HP. mount it to an outboard bracket along with a jack plate. Any thoughts on that? Thanks.

I don't have any pics, no boat yet, but was wondering if it was possible. what kind of problems would someone run into doing something like that. The year of the checkmate was 1978.

Most anything is possible..... Why do you want to convert to an outboard, price??

Issues include disrupting the balance of the boat at rest, and on plane.

It's been done, but many folks claim that when it's been done folks aren't happy with the results.

I say go for it, if you can afford to buy a bracket there are companies that manufacture them for this purpose.

I am thinking that if you haven't yet bought a boat you would come out way ahead by just picking up an OB boat to start with.

Cad is right though, just about anything is possible;)

Welcome to iboats:)

Thought maybe it would perform alittle better with an outboard, but I think I will look for a boat that is made for an outboard. Thanks for your input. I'll try it when I have more experence redoing boats. Thanks.
