Converting DT200 to Counter Rotation?

I have a pair of 1988 DT200's on a boat and they are both standard rotation motors. I'm wondering what it would take to convert one motor to counter rotating? Is the easiest/cheapest method to find a used counter rotating lower unit or can I buy the parts/gears to revers the rotation of the current gearcase I have? I don't suppose there's a simple way to just switch the shif linkage? :)

Thanks for any help,
Rob

I am considering buying a boat with the exact same setup. I wsa surprised that they were not counter-rotating. What type of boat do you have and how does it handle/perform with those motors. Thanks.

Re: Converting DT200 to Counter Rotation?

I have them on a 26' Sea Ox Walkaround. The boat is fairly heavy and has a full hard top as well. The motors perform ok, but I think I could get a little more speed out of it with a C/R setup. Right now I cruise at 26-28kts at 4400 rpm and WOT is about 32-34 kts at 5500 rpm depending on the load. I'm running 15x17 props, but I've been wanting to try a pair of 14.5x19 or so props to see if I can get a better cruise speed and maybe better fuel milage from it, but I haven't found a decent used pair yet.....

For some reason, every boat I've ever seen with twin suzukis around the same age had two standard rotation motors. I wonder if suzuki even offered a counter rotating motor back then??

-Rob

Re: Converting DT200 to Counter Rotation?

Don't think you will get any better speed out of the change to CR for one engine. With the CR you will have the same gear ratio and prop set up as the Non CR engine (if not your in a whole different problem area) so speed and engine rpm should be the same as the Non-CR engine. Prop changes and trim/weight changes may help gain some speed with current engines. The reason for CR props is to help correct prop torque which affects steering effort and for high performance boats, the re-enrty twist when jumping waves. With better steering systems (hydraulic units for outboards) the CR issues isn't as justified as long as your not out wave juming in the boat.
