I have a 1992 15 hp and my arm/shoulder is almost gone on me and I am wondering if I can convert my motor to an electric start. Is it possible or would it be too expensive to even try. Is there room to do it? Any suggestions? I checked the search but didn't find exactly what I wanted. Tks in advance.

If yer' breakin' your arm pull starting, then something is amiss malibu.

Electric start kits are available from your local John/Rude dealer. But your talking large $'s here....almost $600 worth of large dollars.

Maybe we just otta' see what going on before we start shoveling out change. Give us a little history on the engine and what you have to do to get it running.

Tks OBJ for your reply. I kind of thought that would be the responce for my question and $ is the issue here. I hurt my arm/shoulder 3 years ago and it's never healed right and will not anymore. Electric start would be nice buy not for $600.00. Tks for your help. Appreciated

Well shoot malibu....let's talk about the engine. Just how hard is it to start? Take more than three pulls? How's the other arm? A 9.9 that is properly tuned should never take anymore than three pulls to start. Maybe coming outta' winter lay up, but after that, should start very easily.

You might also try ebay for a elec start kit. Or maybe if someone has a junk 9.9 with the elec start on it, might get it for a song.

Always a way malibu......always.

Re: Converting Johnson 15hp to electric start

Not to derail the thread but.....
I have TWO Evinrude Fast Twin 18hp motors. Both are 1958 units. One is electric start, one is not.The electric start unit I have is basically cooked due to stupidity (see my other post). The Non-electric version I picked up from a neighbor of my father-in-law in the Northern neck of Virginia. It looks like it came straight from the showroom floor! It also appears that I can convert the thing to electric start by using all of the components from the original electric start unit with very little effort. If anybody has an opinion on this, feel free to share it. Here's the thing: If you really want to convert that thing to electric start,go searching for parts from the same motor that already had electric start to begin with.Looks to me like you could save a bunch of money.Of course, there's gotta be a good reason why you're having to yank that thing so much to get it cranked in the first place....

If both 18's are of the same year, should not be a problem putting the electric start on the rope start.

Re: Converting Johnson 15hp to electric start

It is the hardest to start after winter storage like u said OBJ and afterwards it takes 3 pulls usually to get it going. I am right handed of course and that's the arm that is effective. Had a log kick back on me and threw it out of joint(my shoulder i mean) and it's never been the same since. Can't do anything with my left arm but I will put up with the motor the way it is. As a matter of fact, going out in about 2 hours with it so I will"over come" my problem for the next 8 days or so camping. Tks for all your answears.

Re: Converting Johnson 15hp to electric start

A guy has offered me a 15HP, 1989 Johnson used electric start conversion kit for my 1976 Johnson manual start 15HP. WILL IT FIT? Does anyone know out there? Thanks.
