I have a 18' Stratos f/g fishing boat with two live wells. Does anyone see a problem converting one live well into a cooler? of coarse I would clean it out good. I figured I could fill it with ice and when finished pull the plug and drain. Are these wells insolated?

Re: Converting live well into cooler

I had an old bass boat and used the rear live well for a cooler. Worked like a champ until I had to re-deck the boat (I discovered wood rot when I went to recarpet it) and it cracked in the process. It was fairly thin plastic or composite of some sort if I remember correctly, so little or no insulation, other than the hatch that kept the sun off of it.

Thanks for the reply. I think I will try it. My biggest concern is the cold ice on the plastic and the constant pounding of the waves.

I fish with my next door neighbor on his Nitro, & he always uses the rear livewell as a cooler. :)

If you use block ice ,put a large towel on the bottom,it will stop from sliding.

Re: Converting live well into cooler

One idea (needs more "design" work) would be to take a larger size styrofoam cooler and somehow insulate inside or outside the livewell. Assuming the lid is smaller than inside of livewell, it would need to be done in pieces. With as many folks practising catch & release unless in a tournament, using livewell for cooler makes sense. My rear livewell lid is large enough I usually set tackle boxes down in it. A real bummer if you forget to put plug in before launching though.

BL...
