hi guys....i recently bought a boat that has a Johnson 115 outborad with manual tilt, i was wondering if anyone has rig-up a DIY (homemade) power tilt on your outboard.
i was looking into doing this conversion. i've looked at some high-torque dc stepper motors that are used on milling machines, these motors can handle several hundred pounds load. hmmm...

Re: converting manual tilt to electric (powered)

If you plan on using this only to tilt the motor up, when not in use, then ok. Are these motors weatherproof?

But if you plan on using it for power trim also,
"several hundred pounds load" isn't going to cut it.
You need several thousand pounds.
Consider the amount of force that will be pushing on it, to propel the boat at 40 mph thru and eventually over the water.

Better to find a used unit, or buy a new Panther or CMC unit and bolt it on.

Why not check with a dealer for a unit, new or used. I have done that on a couple of occasions and works great; priced right, installation not a problem.

Mark
