I want to try to convert my 1982 Johnson 35 HP model 35 E 770 from remote back to tiller control. I currently have Johnson ShipMaster Controls with Teleflex Steering. The set-up is way to forward in the boat (14' Smokercraft) for my liking. Any suggestions?

Re: Converting Remote Back to Tiller Control?

Probably wont be much help but,Years ago I added tiller to a 77 merc 50. It was strictly bolt on.
But motor had never been set up for steering.
I think a good dealer could tell you.I dont like wheels on small boats.Take up too much space,
weight etc.But why not move it If you have a little mechanical know how it shouldnt be too tough. On some motors a tiller might bolt on while others may require a new belly pan and a bunch of linkage.Find a good reliable dealer someone who has been around awhile. I have used H Chalk and Son In northern NY. they have 50 years expierence
I feel sure they could help you.And probably get the right parts. They are a long way from you but a call wouldnt hurt. 315 686 4125. Good luck.

Re: Converting Remote Back to Tiller Control?

Thanks Steel, The steering setup is a teleflex but it doesn't use a steering wheel. It uses a lever which moves parellel to the length of the boat. All three controls; steering lever, throttle and FNR are on the side of the hull. A feller has to have 2 hands on the end of his right arm OR one heck of a long left arm to drive the boat comfortably. Just might try to move everything to the back seat if it's possible. I inherited the boat, motor and trailer in like new condition. I don't think the motor saw much use (less than 30 hrs.) so I can afford to invest some money in fixing it up. The boat dealer is close to where the outfit is stored. I'll talk at him this weekend. Thanks again
