Converting Runabout into C/C

I just took an old Mark Twain Runabout off of a friends hands. It's only a 16 ft. but is structurally sound. Anyone ever tried removing the forward deck area, and converting to center console? It's just a putter around project, but I'd like to do it and use the boat on the river.
I don't see a problem with cutting along the the gun'l line all the way fwd. I'd like to try fairing and decking in plywood and glassing. Any thoughts?

Now you've sold me. Man your boat looks good. I'll take pictures, I believe this will be a winter long project. Thanks.

AJY, what did you do to determine where to locate the console?

CastawayRay,

Thanks for the compliments! The gelcoat was crazed very badly. I spent a lot of time sanding and then I sprayed automotive filling primer and sanded some more. I then sprayed 3 coats polyurethane top coat with wet sanding in between. After using the boat all summer I wish I would NOT have spent so much time making the paint nice because I just cringe when I bump into something! Unfortunately all the pictures I have are posted. I was in such a hurry to tear into the project that I forgot to take more!

maballance
Funny you should ask, I asked the same question to this forum about a year ago! The best response I got was "if it looks right, it probablly is!" That was pretty good advice. But I took it one step further. The very first thing I did was to build the console out of bare plywood and rigged the boat and took it for a test ride. I left the console loose in the boat and moved it fore and aft and did some hole shots and top speed runs to find the best place. I'm glad I took the extra step because I decided that the console was too tall and I was able to shorten it with out ruining the paint and such! Good luck with the project.

AJY

One more thing.

About paint...

I used cheap white marine poly on the bottom and good blue paint (petit easypoxy) on the top. If there is one place I would have spent more money (in hindsight) I would have used the good stuff all around. The easypoxy went on SOOO much nicer. I brushed the top because I didn't want to mask the bottom (which was complete). It wetted out like no other paint I've ever used. One can't tell the sprayed from the brushed! (although my spray gun is a cheapie!)

AJY
