Hello iboat neighbors I was wondering if you could help me. I have a 1972 302 ford Merc. It had between 1500 and 2500 hrs when we bought it. It is in great shape however it has never been rebuilt. that goes for the stern drive as well. The outdrive is in good shape also but could use an over haul.

So how can I do it? How can I convince my wife that it needs to be overhauled? I read in the manual for the stern drive that the U-joint should be greased well every 2 years. I don't think it's ever been done because the stern drive has never been taken off.

I've tried to tell her "better we do it now before something major goes wrong with it"

Man she's a stubborn bull-headed women.

Explain to her what happens if you are 2 miles from shore when the drive craps out.......... Make sure she understands that one person with a paddle (you) will not get the boat back in in less than 12 hours and if she helps it will be at least 6 hours..............

As Capt Ron sez in the movie "If anything is going to happen, its going to happen out there"!

My opinion, the longer you wait to have the maintenance done, the harder it is going to be to service it due to corrosion. Its not easy taking an outdrive off that hasn't been removed every couple years.

Just tell her the longer you wait, the more it is going to cost which means less shopping for her.............SS

Tell her you need a new boat because the one you have is on its last legs and you don't trust it anymore.

Argue over a new boat for a while.

Then offer to compromise by getting the outdrive overhauled.

JB is right on.

Not long ago I announced to my wife that I was going to buy a motorcycle. We discussed (read argued) several days about it. Finally I gave in and told her that since the motorcycle was so contentious, I would just buy myself a new gun instead.

She said that's great, just no motorcycle. I didn't want a motorcycle from the beginning, heh, heh.

That's good. Maybe I will try that one.

Just slap....'er never mind.....;):)

I was thinking about hitting her with a big stick:eek: We she came to I would just tell her that she said I could over haul it. "Don't you remember honey, you said I could right before your fainting spell"

I could. But we are on a limited budget and besides my wife and I are partners in everything so if I did just tell her "I am going to rebuild it and that's that" I would be sleeping in the garage for a couple of days. Not to mention the lack of sex I would be getting.:p

Now where is that stick.

Re: Convincing the wife.

Maybe the problem isnt convincing her to let you spend the money as it is YOU HAVING THE BOAT.....some women dont like for their hubbys to have too many toys. Afterall dont you already have a car or truck?

Re: Convincing the wife.

That reminds me of the joke:

'So, I was out of town and I call home on the telephone and my brother answers. He says, "Dude, your cat died." I was like, "Whoah! You aren't supposed to just come right out and say that. You're supposed to tell me that he was on the roof chasing a bird and he had a little accident and that you've taken him to the vet and there may be hope. Then, the next time I call to find out if he's okay you're supposed say that it's looking grim, but you're doing all you can. Then, finally, when I call next you tell me that he passed away peacefully in his sleep." Well, a few weeks later I was out of town again. I called home and my brother answered again. When I ask how everyone is doing he says, "Well, Grandma was on the roof chasing a bird and she had a little accident. I took her to the vet, and they said there is hope."'

So tell her: "Well, Honey, the boat needed new spark plugs..."

My wife *insisted* that we get a truck to pull the boat. I was using the station wagon, but it seems she got a bit embarassed when we went to launch the boat - I'd drive it back till the rear bumper was in the water, and the tailpipe was going blub blub blub...

So, now we have a 2004 Ford F350 (with the diesel engine) 4x4, with the crew cab (for the kids).... The kicker was that I was totally happy using the wagon. Now we have an extra payment for the truck, that money could've gone to the boat... :(

Seems to me that if you put a bit of oil in the gas, and got the boat smoking real good - your wife would probably agree to fund some repairs.. Muhahah!
