I have a vovlo penta 5.0GL PEFS. The Coolant sensor is bad which is giving me the warning horn. I ordered a new one part number 3850397, which came in to the loacl volvo dealer. The problem is, the one in the image shows a connector, which matches what came in. My sensor and harness have not been modified, and my sensor is a spade with matching female spade connector. The new one appears to have two pins. I need help so I can find the right part to have proper warning horn operation.

Are you looking at the right part on the boat? There is going to be a coolant temp sensor, which has the two pins, and a sending unit for the gauge, which is usually the one with the single spade connector.

Check the thermostat housing, that's where the CTS should be.

I am looking at the correct part. My cooling sensor (Analog) has a threaded stud that a ring terminal goes on. My CTS on the thermostat housing has a spade. The wiring is original with no splices or changed connectors. Still looking for an answer.

Can you post a picture of what your asking and it's location on the engine ?

Personally, I would head to an auto parts store and get a Normally open temp switch that closes around 210?F and has the correct thread for your engine. Either 3/8" or 1/2" NPT.

Thanks Don, I have scoured the volvo site looking at 5.0l engines and can't find it. Heading to the auto part store tomorrow. Seems weird that my engine is different.

Your engine isn't different, and below is a picture of your alarm switch (circled in blue) from the OEM service manual for your engine. Volvo just has the parts program messed up (Very Common Problem) and until you take the part back and get the dealer to actually contact Volvo tech with the problem, you won't find the part you want.

Re: Coolant temp sensor part number (Catalog part is wrong)

Don,
Thanks for the info. It is nice to know I am not crazy. I ended up picking up the volvo penta part that was the wrong part. I was going to adapt the sensor as I was having trouble finding the part I needed. The part came bagged in a volvo and then AC Delco part marked bag. While verifying the schematic for the sensor, I came across the cross reference for the 2 pin sensor for the spade version. Found it in stock at my local auto part store, so I am giving it a try in the morning.

I am going to contact Volvo Technical to get the correct part number and verify what I used. If it is wrong, I'll be replacing it with the right part. I will have to continue to monitor my analog gauge. Thank you very much for the info once again. The AC delco part number I am using is 25036135.
