I have an 87 165hp/3.7lt mercruiser with a closed cooling system, tomorrow i would like to drain the fresh water system so i can refill with antifreeze etc. can anyone tell me how much water the system holds i.e. in litres (fresh water), also should it be a 50/50 solution?

Re: Cooling Capacity

Get 2 gallons of your favorite antifreeze and mix it 50/50 with water. That should fill your system and have part of one of the bottles with some mixed for use later when/if the level drops. It's always nice to have a little coolant and oil on the boat when out.
You should also run the 50/50 mixture year around for corrosion protection for your engine and manifold.

I'd use "RV" antifreze, not the stuff you mix 50/50 for your car.

DHP

For the "closed" portion of your system, follow Don S's advice. For the "raw water" portion of your system, just drain it or try Camco Ban Frost 2000 if you want to use antifreeze.

Maybe I misunderstood, but I was thinking you were talking about the fresh (antifreeze) side of the engines cooling system.
