Cooling Hose Question

Hi everyone,

I need some help with the cooling hoses for my 5.7 truck engine that I have converted for marine use....

I've looked in the factory service manual, but cannot find the part numbers that I'll need (some of the belts from my old 5.0 Mercruiser were badly perished and the part numbers on some of them were not legible).

Can anyone supply a complete list of the necessary parts?

NOTE - I've attached an image of the engine as it stands currently, which has a shot of the thermostat housing, exhaust manifolds and heat risers.

Also, the old engine (which was connected to an Alpha One stern drive) had what looked like a thin cylinder inline with the cooling hoses on the left side of the motor (along the #1 cylinder bank). From what I was told by a previous Mercruiser mechanic, that is an oil cooler. If so, why would that be associated with the cooling system?

Any help is much appreciated.

The oil cooler is fed with the same water that cools your engine. It has a small line in and out carrying oil and a heavier hose in and out carrying water. There is a chamber inside keeping the oil and ester separate and it works a a sort of heat exchanger. No harm to clean it out before use as it can accumulate rusty crud , affecting your cooling system.

get the mercruiser marine stuff.

the only thing that should be left of your truck motor is the block, heads, crank, pistons, and cam

everything else should come from your 5.0 marine motor

your motor needs an oil cooler, unlike a truck that gets to coast down the highway only needing 5hp to keep it going 45 mph, your boat uses all the hp its got, so it makes a lot of heat.

also, you should keep ALL your related posts together vs making a bunch of small posts.

Thanks Scott - my apologies. I thought it would be easier to start a new thread for each issue (there have been many for me with this engine build).

Yes, that is correct. Everything on the engine so far is suitable for a marine application.

The cooling hoses (and inline oil cooler) from my old 5.0 engine are thrown out, so I don't know what are needed and what is not needed as I also went for a different type of thermostat housing than was on the 5.0 engine (which was rusted out). That 5.0 had a big-block style housing where the one that I'm using now has the 4-hole kind of design.

Also - where do the lines come from for the oil - near the filter?

there is a block adapter for the oil.

why was the oil cooler thrown out? be prepared to be shocked when you find out what they cost.

you will want the proper thermostat housing that matches your exhaust system.

My last 2 small block boats didn't have oil coolers. Are you sure it wasn't a PS cooler ?

Ayuh,.... As I said in one of yer various other threads,.... Use the serial number from the ole 5.0l to find the parts ya need,.....

The t-stat housin' has to match yer exhaust manifold choice,....

'n I to, am guessin' what yer callin' the oil cooler was the P/S cooler,... A Must Have part,...
That bag of trash ya threw out is gonna get expensive,....
