i have a 1981 140hp evinrude, the last time i took it out the lake had alot of junk floating around from all the rain so im guessing i sucked something up into my motor cause now the tell tale is very weak, and if i full throttle my motor the buzzer starts going off, everything in the cooling system has been replaced so what do i need to do to get the garbage out of there so i can use my boat again, thanks

Re: cooling issues?

Is the screen for the water pickup still in tact in the lower unit? If it is, hard to say if that is the problem or something else. You could try flushing it on muffs or dropping the lower unit and connecting the water pickup tube to a garden hose to back flush it. While the lower is out inspect the impeller/pump housing for problems.

Re: cooling issues?

Do you have any other indication of actual engine overheating? If you can touch the powerhead for a few seconds it's probably okay. I had an experience with a Johnson V4 that triggered the overheat indicator everytime I used WOT more than a few seconds. It was a bad temperature sensor in the cylinder head. Since your problem is coincidental with a weak telltale stream, try to fix that first. The telltale outlet nipples in the cowling are notorious for clogging with sand/debris. I would start at that location looking for obvious problems. If the outlet is clear, check the telltale hose between the outlet and powerhead for blockage. You might even try a quick run on muffs with the telltale hose off to verify how much water is flowing out of the powerhead. I have had some success back-flushing motors at that location using a small diameter hose nozzle with the motor NOT running. FYI, I have seen tell-tales totally clogged with no overheat indications so it is not necessarily cause-and-effect. It is usually something simple. Hang in there and let us know what you find. Good luck!
