Cooling question

I reguards to my previous question about the amount of water that should be coming out of the top hole: I purchased a set of muffs for the water-intake and hooked it up to the garden-hose.
Water coming out everywhere below the muffs, and thru a small hole below the prop. I can feel a bit of air-pressure, when I put my finger up to the top outlet (pee-hole) I can't get a wire down far enough thru the top hole to see if its plugged.
Some have said, on this site, and Johnson Repair sites, that with this year of motor, that I shouldn't expect a steady stream anyway. Can I get some help with this "possible" problem, please. Its a beautiful working motor, but I want to catch this problem, if it is a problem, before I do some damage. I've been told that there has to be a steady stream coming out the top hole. Thanks again

Re: Cooling question

If you start a new thread, please give the information on your outboard again. Otherwise, folks have got to go hunt up the old thread.

In fact, it's better to do followups on the original thread. That way, all the information is still there.

Since I don't know what your outboard is, I can't comment on your question.

Re: Cooling question

Sorry about that...
I posted a quest. yesterday, reguarding my '76 9.9 Johnson not putting out a stream of water out the top hole. Got only one reply on the amt. of water that should be coming out. Posted a "new topic" instead of a reply. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Re: Cooling question

I would check the thermostats and the water pump. If the motor is not pumping water it will overheat and your problems will be much worse. I'm not sure of your motors year but the fact that it has a pee hole I would say it should have a steady stream of water coming from it. The older motors relieved water through the exhaust.

Re: Cooling question

I've had the boat out 5 or 6 times, since I bought it. Previous owner had the impeller replaced, just before I bought it. Its never had a hitch in it. We've had it running/trolling 4-6 hrs each trip out. The spray coming out of the top hole, is not overly hot but warm, and the housing is not hot to the touch. Is this normal for a '76 9.9 Johnson ?

Re: Cooling question

I doubt that you have a cooling problem. If you've run it that many times and the spray isn't super hot, you're fine.

Most of the water goes out the exhaust, underwater.

Re: Cooling question

Thanks for the input...Several people at work said the same thing you just said.
Since its my first outboard, I don't want it to calve on me! Too much money to repair it, I hear!

Thanks,

Re: Cooling question

If you're really concerned, run it wide open for awhile, on the water, then pop the hood and feel the engine near or on the cylinder head. You should be able to keep your finger on it for a few seconds without burning yourself. If that works OK, then stop worrying.

From your description, though, and the amount of time you've already had it on the water, it's not overheating. If it were, it wouldn't have run so well for so long.

Go enjoy your boat.

Re: Cooling question

Thanks again,
My father in law will probably want it this Sunday. I'll have to work, but will rest easy that no damage will come to it. Thanks..

Kerry

Re: Cooling question

Your motor does not have what is commonly called a pisser (I have a 1975). They came out much later.
