Alright , just replaced the thermostat and gasket and spring on my 1978 25 hp johnson. Reason for replacing was motor overheated becuase no water was coming out of pee hole. After replacing, started motor in a tank but could only get barely a mist, out of exhaust holes and nothing out of pee hole. Took t stat off and checked to see if it was getting water to it by starting with it out. No water even getting up to it. Took lower uny off and rechecked water pump and housing. Everything looked good. Clear passages from water inlet too. Impeller is in great shape, practically new. Only thing i can think of is i installed impeller wrong. Should the side with all the bronze teeth or notches be up or down. Also should the copper pipe go in the quarter sized hole next to drive shaft hole? Any other Things you guys can think of that i missed? Thanks

Re: Cooling Question

Not sure what you mean by bronze teeth, but normally when you go to put the housing over the impeller you turn the driveshaft clockwise to set the direction of the impeller, Yes the tube is supposed to go into the hole next to the driveshaft, sometimes it can get tough because the tube flops around a bit as you put the lower unit up. Also make sure the key that drives the impeller didn't fall out.

Re: Cooling Question

The grommet on top of the impeller housing may have "shifted", restricting water flow, or worse yet shoved itself into the housing. Also make sure the water intake area is clean of debris. Remove the tstat again, and run compressed air up the water line, making sure it exits at the t stat, also back flush it down from the t stat to the water pump. It doesnt matter what way you put in a new impeller, just rotate the drive shaft clockwise like stated, and make sure that the impeller key is installed correctly.

Shift Linkage

Shift Linkage

Is their a way to adjust the shift linkage on a 1978 25 johnson. Keeps popping out of gear, checked lower uny and everything is in mint condition. Didn't know if there was a way to make it stay in gear with shift linkage?
