I have a 1965 Merc 500 series 50 hp motor. It runs great but how do I tell if there is sufficient water running through the motor to keep it cool. Water runs out the prop since that is where the exuast comes out but is this enough and how much is suppose to go through it.

Re: Cooling question

Hi!

There should be a tell-tale sign of streaming water coming out of the bottom of the engine cowl.

Re: Cooling question

Exactly where? There appears to be some dripping but should a 1965-66 have water "peeing" out

Re: Cooling question

Yes, the telltale should have a steady stream of water coming out. It might be clogged; try blowing compressed air up the telltale. Or take the hose off the block and flush/backflush.

If that's not helping, it might be time to renew the impeller.

One way to tell if the water is actually circulating thru the motor is if the water coming out of the prop is noticeably warmer than water coming directly from the hose.

Feel the exhaust manifold cover (big flat cover on the Port Aft side of the motor), if it's cool to the touch or lukewarm at hottest, you've enough water flowing thru the powerhead to adequately cool (at least at idle on the flusher!).

Re: Cooling question

The water coming out of the prop is pretty warm and there is just a drizzle coming out of the other but I am only running it on the "earmuffs". I ran into a new problem though. I can keep the motor running all day on the muffs and I took it to the lake and it would not stay running. Just to be safe. I am going to change the impeller but I am going to clean and rebuild carbs. Does this sound like a good start? I got the Seloc manuel but is there any pointers I should know????? Thanks

Re: Cooling question

Good starting point... A better one would have been to buy the Merc manual... seloc and clymer manuals create more problems for us on this forum than you can imagine....
