Is the nipple on the end of the tell tale important?

I know it restricts the flow and increases the pressure of the output but it gets clogged up so easy. If I remove the nipple and open up the flow will it affect the cooling capability? I am asking this about a 25 hp 4 stroke Yamaha that I run in shallow marsh alot.

Re: cooling question

The manufacturer designed the motor as is. They did not design it to run in mud. The clogging of the tell tale is telling you the the water pump is taking a beating not to mention the potential for the thermostat and the block to get clogged. Sorry but opening the jet is not really an answer.

Re: cooling question

The other day my little tale tale got clogged so instead of trying to unclog it in the dark (i was going duck hunting) I just unscrewed the hose attachment from the flush out location water started flowing like a fountain outta that thing and I ran it out to the camp like that. I know that thing just Tee's off the tell tale so I see no problem?

I say cut away......

your motor will be producing more then enough pressure to handle it.... if not then somethings wrong.
In fact I think there is a pressure valve between your cooling veins and exhaust that opens when there to much water pressure.

STILL A VERY BAD IDEA IN THE WAY OF LIFE SPAN

If I didn't run that boat through the marsh I probably wouldn't run it at all...that's what I use it for and will continue to do so....if it burns up I'll get me a mud motor.

Re: cooling question

what ever is blocking your tell tail nipple will eventually block you cooling system, unless the motor gets a good amount of use in clean water to flush out any small particles.
otherwise all the small particles will simply build up and clog.

might be a good idea to look at a alternative method of cooling your motor.

I have seen one in a flat bottom duck hunting boat. they used an old swimming pool pump power by a radiator cooling fan sitting in a custom built filtering tank in the back of the boat. has been doing it for years .

kiwis are full of great ideas :D

Re: cooling question

might not be a bad idea to look into.

I do flush the motor after most trips and it doesn't get stopped up every time out.
