I have a '79 Evinrude 150 (150949C). On the back of the mid section just below the cowling there are two holes where water comes out when running on the hose. I'm guessing that the water comming from the left hole is from the left head and the right from the right. Here's my question, after the motor has been idling for a while I feel the water comming from the holes. The left side is warm but not enough to burn you. The right will burn you if you keep your hand there for more the a second or two. Also the water seems to be comming out of the left hole faster than the right. Ok, I know my motor has two thermostadts, so could one be opening father than the other? Also should the water be hot or just warm? Could one head being hotter that the other cause it to idle kind of rough? Thanks for any help.

Re: Cooling question

Trying to check temperature while the motor is running on the muffs is misleading at best. If you can't put the motor in a deep barrel, you should at least turn the hose on full blast. That's a large motor to run with muffs and it takes alot to keep it cool. The temp shouldn't burn you (if everything is working right) but, it will be warmer than you might think it should be. Yes, it's likely you have a bad thermostat but remember the water goes through a "jacket" and may not be consistant.

Re: Cooling question

You simply cannot test the water pump or cooling system while running on a hose. It is being force-fed by the hose. You could completely remove the impeller and get some water through it.

Re: Cooling question

You both make very good points. The hose is on full and the muffs are still sucked to the foot. I think I will replace the thermostats anyway and check it next spring in the lake. Thanks.

Re: Cooling question

Why not rent a laser temp gun from a local auto parts store? Check the actual temps while it is running. That way you know how hot it is getting. The engine should idle about 143-150 degrees.
