cooling system not working.

Well, I got my boat running ( volvo Aq131a, 4cyl) and noticed that she was smoking from the riser, well i shut it down and started looking into the cause. I'm not getting any water comming in from the outdrive, "yes I had the muffs on and water running" I pulled the cover for the impeller and and hand turned the engine and it is spinning, I ordered a new impeller online because the fins looked worn down and torn. I just worried that this is not the only thing wrong. Not sure what the part is called but it is a cup with a screen in it just above the pump, I added water in directly there and it poured from the fitting at the riser i'm gussing that is not normal since the water should flow from there back out of the boat correct.

found the 2nd problem, 2 out of the 3 freeze plugs are half out of the manifold, I pulled the manifold and think i can get the plugs back in but what else should i take a look at while it it out, is there any kind of test that can be done to see if it is damaged, also when i pulled the manifold there is no gasket between the manifold and the engian should there be??

this is late notice, if you have a heat/exchanger on side of block open both ends, should be about 50 small tubes, clean out with wire etc, may be blocked

but sounds like you have vp heat exchanger that the cup screen sits in and that is not as simple as tube excanger. can't remember details. maybe a vp guy can check in on this.

re gasket - i've been told no gasket between cast iron and aluminum. again, volvo guy?

Change the impeller before you go overboard.If you noticed missing fins or wear then no water will be pumped.I had same problem and my impeller did not look that bad to me .This may be the only circulation problem you have. Charlie

I replaced the impeler and all fittings on cooling lines, Also flushed the heat exchanger, It is still not pushing water and manifold is overheating..

anti-freeze side is full? does water get from hose to pump with engine off?

project finished... I corrected that a timming issue with the boat and water started flowing I think it was simply not getting enough presure at low rpms to pull water up from the outdrive.. I have the boat running at 700 rpms and getting flow.. As rpms increase i'm getting good steady flow and no overheating.. thanks for all the help guys..
