Is the below description accurate for how the cooling system works on a 1976 9.9 HP Evinrude? I am in the process of a possible purchase and I am concerned that no water is coming out of exahaust port during operation. I only ran it for a few minutes. Description was provided by seller. Thanks.
*************************************
Water enters near lower unit at intake ports, into water pump (just above lower unit and midsection junction). Water pump is driven by the spinning drive shaft. Water is pumped up a copper tube to the powerhead. Water circulates through cooling passages in powerhead and exits down through lower leg and out thru the prop hub. A thermostat in the power head regulates the temperature of cooling water through the powerhead.

pretty much thats it,if you are experiencing an overheat problem and cant figure it out,the copper tube feeds the water has a grommet it enters on the top side, they are notorious fpr collapsing and cutting off the supply of water, the way to fix is removal of powerhead

Shouldn't here be at least some water spitting out of exhaust port area even at initial start up? The seller was trying to tell me that this will not occur until thermostat opens. I ran the motor pretty hard for several minutes and absolutely no water came from exhaust area.

I would have him put it a new impeller and if it don't pump instantly..tell him to take a hike

I am not for sure if that model has a thermostat, but if it does and if you ran it hard for a few minutes it should have opened and have water coming out. Sounds like time for a lower unit drop to see whats wrong, probaly the impellor or as mentioned the grommet is wore out.

If you start it on the muffs water may not spritz out of the exhaust releif so you may not be looking at a problem. When in the water and with some rpm you should get some flow. The higher the rpm the more the flow.

I have a 75 9.9 with a good water pump & it runs cool. It does not spritz running at idle on the muffs. Unless abused this engine is bullet proof.

Feel the block/head to see how warm it is, if it's hot to the touch then it's too hot and thre's a cooling problem. You should be able to touch it for several seconds.
