cooling system question

'84 Mercruiser 5.7 898 w/ Alpha I outdrive...<br />If the water pump in the foot is working correctly, should there be water shooting out of the end of the hose at the front of the engine? I put a new water pump in today and noticed that exhaust was coming from the outdrive like it should but no water with it. I pulled the hose in the front of the engine that leads through the transom into the outdrive to look for water coming out while engine was running but didnt notice any. Engine temp goes to about 200 and stays at idle.

If you have good water flow up to the engine, I would check the risers and manifolds. IF they are plugged up, no water out the back and no water circulation, and an overheat.

Well, that's just it, there isn't any water coming out of the hose that leads through the transom. I don't think the pump is pushing it to the engine. I just replaced the pump, I guess I must have done something wrong.

could it be the main water pump in the front of the engine?

I misread your first post. I thought you said you HAD good water flow to the engine.<br />Are you sure the pump in the drive was installed correctly? Did the water tube going to the upper line up propely? Is the hose between the drive bellhousing and the transom shield kinked or have a hole in it?<br />Is the elbow fitting that goes through the transom plugged?<br />How about the hose from the transom shield to the engine?<br /><br />That "Main Water Pump" on the front of the engine is not the main pump, it's the circulation pump. And needs to have water provided from the raw water pump in the drive.
