I am haveing a problem with the cooling system on my 1956 30 hp evinrude motor. The engine had not been used for 3-4 years. It started on the first pull with new gas, but the engine doesn't seem to be spitting water back out. I took apart the lower and checked the water-pump and the rubber impeller. They are look great. I don't see a clogg in the lower water intake and don't see any problems( holes or kinks in the water line going up the shaft). Any ideas were to look next??

Re: cooling system

Did you have it submerged all the way up to the seam between the lower unit and the exhaust housing, where the water pump is located? These older waterpumps are not good a drawing water from below.
Was the impeller's vanes all pointed out straight, or were they curved. If they were curved, it should have been replaced when you removed it.
Since there's no thermostat in that engine, water should gush out the large hole on the back of the exhaust housing when you start it. Otherwise, there's a restriction somewhere. Try attaching a garden hose to the pump pickup tube, and see what happens when you run water through it.

Good luck!
