cooling?

I just picked up a 135 merc black max this weekend to repower my carolina skiff. It is in great shape but will not allow water to come out the pee hole? I took both thermostats out and blew air thru the jackets and I had air flow even thru the pee hole. This evening I took the water pump apart and it looked real good. Rubber soft and I was able to rotate it with my finger? The guy said it hadn't run in about 4.5 years. Any thoughts? Can I clean the water jackets out? With what? By the way after about 30 minutes, draining the float bowls they had 2-cycle oil in them? I kept pumping the bulb until gas came out of the drain. and with fresh gas it started right up. (AMAZING) I've never had that luck. I already planned on replacing the water pump, rebuilding the carbs and flushing the lower unit out then replace with new gear oil.

My first post!

Re: cooling?

Throw the pump kit in. The impeller should be pretty stiff, not soft. If it's wimpy, it'll just collapse and not pump much water.

While you're at it, check the seals at both ends of the water delivery tube.

Nice find, good luck

Ray, A lot of those V6s have the telltale downstream of the thermostat. You will not see any telltale until the thermostat opens. At idle it may be a dribble or intermittent. A water pressure gauge is a better way to monitor engine cooling.

Oh yeah when I got the new kit it had a rubber washer/bushing that went to the top of the housing where the shaft exits. Looking at my old waterpump that seal was burnt up and melted. I replaced housing and everything complete kit.

I have a 2002 25 hp 2 stroke I am working on. I saw the intermittent stream from the pee hole and know for sure the water pump was replaced last summer. I have never owned one that was set up this way. The water jacket leaked a little and I removed it to regasket. The dealer had tried to access the non existent head by taking the water jacket off. The gasket tore and was not replaced when they condemned the motor for low compression. All that said, I got to see the thermostat and how it set in the hole. No water flows to the pee hole on mine unless the thermostat is open. That would be why the water was always warm when it was flowing. If I keep the motor I want a gauge but will have to figure out were to put it. My buddy with a Johnson works off a temp gauge on his 110 outboard.

Re: cooling?

Okay everyone I bought new thermostats today and installed. I'm assuming with 142 degree thermostats the motor should run right around that right or a little higher?
