Lets start with the batting side.
At the start of the game the first 2 batsmen will take possition, one at the strikers end and one at the non strikers end.
The batsman at the strikers end will be the one who faces the bowler.
When the ball is delivered (bowled) by the bowler it is the job of the facing batsman to firstly defend his wicket and not get out, and also to hit the ball into the field and try to make a run.
A run is achived when both batsmen have run the length of the pitch 22yrds, at which time the batsman who was at the non strikers end will be facing and the batsman who faced the previous ball will be at the non strikers end. (unless of course if they run 2 runs then they would be back where they started)
