Cordless Phone Question

I am looking to buy a new cordless phone. I want caller ID and caller IQ. :D The latter isn't available in my area. I want a wall mountable base station with answering machine and preferably dual handsets. I have had problems with cordless phones not lasting and the batteries developing very short life spans. I know about charging them fully and then keeping the phone off the charger as long as possible to prevent the battery developing a memory.

Beyond cordless, answering machine and caller ID and preferably dual handsets, I really have no other criteria beyond quality and a price point below $100.00. I've had Sony, Uniden, Panasonic and AT&T. Brand is not important. I am asking for your recommendations and suggestions. I appreciate your input and thank you all.

I hate em all. Costco has a Uniden set that looks pretty good with all those features.

Re: Cordless Phone Question

Cordless used to be nice until the wireless computer parts like mouse and keyboard became popular. All these things work on the same wavelength range that cordless phones do.The result is constant static on your cordless when your neighbour uses his cordless mouse to surf the web.
I live in an upscale neighborhood where everybody and their cousin uses cordless computer systems. As a result I had to revert to a land based line just to be able to talk on the phone.

Re: Cordless Phone Question

Get a cordless phone at 5.8 GHz to avoid interference with any wireless router at 2.4 GHz. VTech is a good choice as well as a number of others. Consumer Reports did a review of them in their Oct 2005 issue. You might get to see at your local library. The online website requires you to be a paying subscriber to their online access. CNET has a number of reviews which are pretty informative.

Quality, answering machine, dual handsets... for under $100? You'll get quality and those features for $200+, but any less and they'll be junk in a year.

We have a Vtech at 2.4 with answering machine, caller ID, two phones, and is wall or desk mountable. It has a page function on the base so you can find the phones when the kiddos haul them off. It also has an intercom on each phone to call the other one, works real well. We got it Christmas before last so its about 1 1/2 yo. Works real good so far.

Re: Cordless Phone Question

I should have pointed out that some cordless phone sets designated at 5.8 GHz also transmit at 2.4 GHz so you have to check carefully to avoid the wireless router signal interference at 2.4 GHz.

We have 2.4 and 5.8 phones and they pretty much suck. Our old 900 MHz phone is the best. I wonder if you can still buy them.

FWIW, I use wireless on the computer and a panasonic cordless. It doesn't seem to interfere. I have had issues with the panasonic stuff in the past but this one has held up for several years.

Re: Cordless Phone Question

Get a seperate answering machine - that way when the phone dies you can just throw the phone away and not have to replace the ans. machine as well.

I have my cordless phone plugged into my UPS (Uninteruptable Power Supply) for power. This has led to a battery that has lasted at least 4 years now. The cheap chargers will drain the battery when the power goes out and the UPS prevents this.

Try an antique dealer. :D

My first cordless was a Kraco(900 mhz). I could almost walk around the block (several hundred yards) and never lose reception. Lasted for 3-4 years. Then I upgraded and gave the Kraco to my brother.

Well, since I have bought too many to count new phones, and I don't need to tell you which one my brother still uses.
