What is directly behind the mercruiser tag/emblem on the top of the assembly??I saw my tag/emblem peeling at a corner and quite a bit of dusty corrosion behind the tag.Is the top of the assembly housing any particular part?concerned with it worsening. All the rest looks fine.I attached a pic of the same from eBayhttp://www.ebay.com/itm/Mercruiser-Alpha-1-Gen-1-transom-assy-assembly-housing-and-backing-plate-/252824423066

Need to select the chain looking thing to post a link

The upper pivot pin is on top along with the steering yoke. With the decal peeling off, in most cases its no issue. Just means the adhesive or primer on the paint was not installed correctly. Could also just come off over time. In any case, just peel it off, sand, primer and paint

Ayuh,...... 'bout an 1/8" or maybe 3/16" of aluminum, 'n then the Inside of yer boat,....

The sticker is just a sticker,.... If there's a transom assembly serial number, that's usually where it's stamped,...

^ yes it would, but it would take a fair amount of corrosion to do it. Peel off the decal, and clean it up, you can add some filler to smooth it you want to. It must be clean to seal it up properly. Prime and paint, get a new decal and away ya go.

Hope thats all I need.If it winds up being a hole guess I will be JB welding it for now and putting on a new transom assembly next year.

Unfortunately confirmed that under that emblem was enough corrosion that I was able to put my finger through.Very strange everything surrounding the emblem is sound.Almost as if the emblem itself acted like disimilar metals which I realize can't be the case.Gonna clean it up and JB weld it to get through the season and pick up an ebay transom assembly for replacement prior to next season.Saw some pretty fresh looking ones for $3-600.Guess I will check the bonding wires inside on the transom plate to find the cause.Strange right?? All zincs were about 1/2 worn as is typical for my experience.

Doesn't happen often, but ever now and then. If your steering pin, bearing and pin seal is intact, you could repair it by using the J-R Marine pivot pin repair procedure, just don't need to do all the cutting
Here is the link

http://www.jrmarine.com/instructions.htm

Or could use a plate and 3M 5200
