Correct Battery Procedure - 24V MinnKota

I have a new (February 2011) 70lb. MinnKota with two 12V Stowaway Batteries wired in a series to power it. I recently had to replace one of the batteries because it tested bed which leads me to ask a few questions about charging and what not:

1) I charge each battery separately using a plug in charger when the boat is on the trailer at home. Should I disconnect the batteries when doing this?

2) The batteries are wired as such: positive from motor to positive on battery 1, negative on battery 1 to positive on battery 2, negative on battery 2 to negative from motor. Is this correct?

3) I unplug the motor from the deck outlet (installed with motor this year) when not in use and I did all the wiring myself with good connections and a 50A fuse on the hot side to the motor which has never tripped. Is there something I'm not thinking of that could have caused the battery to go bad or was it just defective?

I know that's a lot but any help anyone has would be much appreciated.

Tight Lines!

Just like people, engines, radios, or any other mechanical or electrical device, things just die -- some sooner than others for various reasons. No -- you do not need to disconnect the batteries when charging them. You don't disconnect them in your car and you don't need to in your boat. HOWEVER: Connect the 12 volt charger to each battery individually -- meaning move BOTH charger leads to the battery you are charging. Series wiring on two batteries to provide 24 volts looks like the diagram (which is the way you described).

Many thanks. That's how I charge them, one at a time with both leads to the same battery.

Are those Stowaways good batteries? I got them with the motor from Academy Sports.

Any battery is good so long as you maintain them properly. Charge them immediately after use. Not just before you go out fishing.
