Correct bottom gasket for impeller kit?

Hi all I purchased a Mercury / Quicksilver 8M0100526 Impeller Repair Kit

Initially I thought there that my kit was missing my bottom gasket, but now I think maybe it has the proper bottom gasket, but I'm not sure.

There is a piece that looks like the bottom gasket, but is actually made out of steel. Is this correct? I was about to complain to the vendor when I realized the picture shows it pretty clearly as a metal piece. Did I buy the wrong kit, or are the new bottom gaskets metal?

Thanks for the help

I bought a quicksilver branded kit, but this listing has better pictures. The second picture in the listing below shows it.

Yeah, I get that. Metal plate in the middle. Gasket on either side. Some people use sealant, some people don't.

The issue is that in the past when I have done impeller changes the bottom gasket, part number 23 from your link, was actually gasket material. In this latest kit it is not, it's steel. I googled a bit on it and it looks like this is an update to the kit, but it seems really weird.

Yeah, I actually thought I'd lost the gasket, I was looking around the shop and couldn't find it, then I started to email the vendor to ask about it, and I realized the picture had it that way also. It doesn't seem like it would work. I'll definitely be using sealant this time.

I guess though, if you think about it, it doesn't really matter if the impeller assembly is sealed to the lower part of the drive. What is important is that the lower steel plate, part 18, is sealed to the impeller housing, part 22, with the gasket in order for the impeller assembly to function properly. The upper gasket, part 24, is normal, so that should be accomplished.

Anyway it seems like an expensive change, for no benefit. I can't see it working any better than the original gasket.

Just noticed the Amazon link posted above says: "The updated metal gasket replaces older version. VERY IMPORTANT!"

I think I recall one other member mentioning this too in the past but not positive on that.

Maybe either @Yegboats or @muc happen to of seen a parts bulletin lately regarding the change?🤷‍♀️🤷‍♂️

I encountered this last year when I changed mine also. They switched to the metal one a few years back it seems. I used a thin layer of Permatex Aviation on both sides.

There's not a parts bulletin that I'm aware of. The instructions in the kit covers it.

I finished the change, and it seems to work ok. I did use Permatex Aviation sealer on it.
