Could anyone tell me what the correct part# is for an impeller kit on a 1985 85hp Force ?
Im looking at the iboat website and it calls out #18-3251 for my replacement $28
However the gaskets and back plates dont look anything like the ones I removed. Theirs have extra bolt holes among other things.
But the impeller looks like a perfect match.

My model number 856X3L.

Thanks in advance

If it helps, your motor is actually a 1983.

Sierra part number 18-3251 is for newer 90 hp motors.

I don't find a Sierra pump kit part number for your motor.

A Mercury dealer may have them available, but not sure.

Re: Correct Force 85hp impeller part# ?

Thank you for the info on my year Willy. The boat was given to me with not info. and no history. The ex-owner has slept since then and dont member much.
I figured how to the lower unit off and took the the water pump apart. The impeller didnt look that bad and was still a bit flexible. The ends were a little worn . Nothing looked cracked or melted or destroyed. I cleaned as much as I could and applied a little 24C lube as the book advises. I put it back together and started it up. I ran it a minute or 2 and still no water moved.
I called a local shop that actually had the impeller Ive been looking for. I put that in and still no water was moving.
What am I overlooking ?

How are you getting water to it. Muffs?
I have found on my 1984 that you have to submerg the engine at least up to the intakes. On mine they are slots in the leg. With muffs = no water, submerged = water.

I have a large plastic bin that when filled, puts the water level around about 5 -7 inches above the intake slots. I shined a flash light in the exhaust ports and saw some moisture inside. I felt around and felt that the walls inside were wet.

I wonder if the impeller key could be falling out of place ?

As much fun as it is trying to stab the drive shaft back in to the powerhead ....I guess I will take it out again.
I wonder if there could be an obstruction below the water pump ?
The shop down the street wants $140 for a water pump job. I just may throw in the towel.

Water pump needs to be submerged with those motors,
The pump will not suck water up into the housing and self prime.
Also, to check for proper water circulation, remove the thermostat cover, gasket, thermostat. Start it up. Don't put face in front of opening unless you want to get wet. 8)

Roscoe was right !
I went to Walmart and found the biggest trash can I could find.
Had to ovalize the can a bit but I got the lower unit to the bottom. I filled it to the top a couple inches above the water pump. Started and viola ! Water spurted out. :)
I ran it for about 5 minutes. Gave a bit of throttle once or twice. Lots of dark blue smoke. The smoke would come and go. But the water continued to exit all ports... The water in the can became pretty filmy and yellow.
Actually smelled like fuel.

Anything I can do to curb the amount of smoke ?

Thanks for everyones help ! I would have spent hundreds of dollars otherwise
