correct gas/oil mix...It smokes like a pig!

I own a 115 hp, inline 6 from mid 1970's, I bought it used and assume the mix to be 50:1. I use good quality oil and the motor runs great, however, it smokes alot, more than any other 2 stroke around, I also own a 65 hp and the smoke level is much less. Is 50:1 right?, I'm thinking of leaning out the mix but hate to to end up with a siezed piston or something. Has anyone tryed this?, any help would be great

50:1 is right for all pre-mix mercs of that era. Does it still smoke a lot when it's been run to normal operating temp?
Try changing the brand of oil.. That's what 2 strokes do.. anyway .. smoke and fly.
Just make sure you ARE mixing at 50:1 (15 us gallons is to be moxed with about 1.1litres or 2.34 US pints

Do a compression check and let us know the numbers.

You might want to seafoam the engine to decarbonize the cylinders. Then you will really see smoke, do it out on the bay somewhere so your neighbors don't get pissed off...

I did a comp test last fall, I can't remember exact numbers but I do know the comp was good in all cylinders, somthing like 130psi and all within a few psi of each other.

thanks again for helping out

I like the Penzoil Synthetic Blend that Wal-Mart sells..........reasonably priced, doesn't seem to smoke a lot, and smells nice too!

A Seafoam treatment might help, also you didn't mention if the motor was running well or not. A ruptured fuel diaphragm will let excess fuel into the motor, of course it'll run poorly. As will leaking carburetor float/needle/seat assy.

You might want to 'tweek' in your idle mixture, just set it a tad on the rich side of the adjustment range, for good out-of-the-hole acceleration.

BTW I always use Chevron, the Techron additive is Good Stuff for 2-strokes. And at least around here in the PNW, no alcohol. If you're using a Gasohol fuel and can get non-gasohol, I'd try that and see if it makes a diff.

Before the use of Seafoam became widely known on the internet forums, I recommended use of the Techron additive in customer's motors and got good feedback.

HTH........ed

P.S. just a thought, a loost main jet will make it smoke like Mad but of course it'd run pretty rich on that carb. Might not be a bad idea to check the color of the spark plugs for abnormalities.

i'd try doing a decarb with deep creep/sea foam, then see what it does. mine was carboned up and smoking from lots of low speed trolling and smartened up after a decarb

thanks again, I changed my plugs this spring and all looked good, cleaned carbs also, again still smoking but runs great.

mine was idleing great and running good but lots of smoke at idle and WOT was down about 2 mph. decarbed it and it smartened right up. 15 mins of cruising then 3 or 4 hours of trolling was plugging stuff up

A merc tower of power ain't a trolling motor. Get a kicker.

If it's smoking, you're getting a lot of fuel burning at low temperature or pressure, not completely burning either the gas or the oil.

Could be engine timing, or could be slightly righ mixture, such as running standard jets at high altitude, high floats, leaking needles, or a combination.

hope it helps
