Thx Jerry. The lowest I seem to be able to adjust my idle is about 1100 without stalling. It seems a little high to me.

That's way high.
Too high and you can do damage to the drive train.
Check the timing and see if it's off.

My 1996 Volvo penta 3.0L was stalling at idle and I had to adjust the idle to 1100 as well to get it to idle without stalling. After warming up it sometimes drops to 800-900. I can definitely feel it engage when shifting into gear but it seems like this is a common occurrence with this motor.

Idle circuit in the carburetor is plugged. Hey this reminds me of the guy who couldn't get his truck to pass emissions (back in the 80s) so he set the 'idle' to almost 2000 rpms and controlled his speed with the brake. I am not making this up.

sounds like I may need some carburetor work or timing adjustment I guess. General consensus is around 8-900 from what I gather here.
