I have 2008 tahoe Q4 with a 3.0 mercruiser ,alpha one drive. It idles around 900 rpm is that too fast? The drive it ginds and engages hard i was wondering if maybe it was idling too fast and that is the reason for the hard engage. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

WAY to fast for idle. should be 650 to 700 rpm. Not only makes it hard to shift, but it probably diesels like crazy when you shut it off also.

It is the carb model. Is the idle set screw easy to access, and is this something i want to tackle my self.

Does the engine slow down as it warms up? You have the TKS carb, and it takes about 10 minutes before the idle comes down to normal idle rpm.
Here is a link to the TKS carb, might want to check out how and why it works. You could have several reasons it won't idle at the proper rpm.
