Correct oil for tilt/trim water came out when drained reservoir

I just drained the oil from my tilt/trim reservoir and what came out was a milky mess. I have never filled or bought oil to put in because have not had the boat a long time. The problem is that I do not know what type of oil was in it prior to this. So now I do not know whether to buy hydralic, transmission fluid, or the 30w oil? I have read that it is not good to mix oils in the tilt/trim system. I have force 85hp 1989 Force external pump system.

Most posts talk about 30 wt. non detergent. Some have transmission fluid. Milk will be pinkish. Hydraulic fluid is best but, given you don't know the original fluid, you'll have to drain your entire system just to be sure it's all matched.

Well it was not pink. Not sure how to drain the whole system, I drained from the bottom connecting tube but I would imagine there is still more in other parts of the system. Any suggestions on draining?

Karla, till RRitt gets here, go to advanced search this forum. Type in ('89 force tilt/trim flush). About 19 entries down is an entry by dmas titled" '89 125hp force......pump oil", from Feb. '09. Flushing is described there. The 125t/t will be the same as an 85t/t.

okay thanks. One thing I am not sure about is where to fill it. It does have what is called a fill plug but I want to make sure that is where I put the oil in because do not want to mess anything up. May be a dumb question but I want to make sure. When I read the post I did not understand what he meant by " Hang bucket underneath and run pump in up direction until it is out of fluid" because the tilt/trim pump on my boat cannot be moved up or down unless you remove the whole pump from the boat.

Here is the post where directions were given:

lift engine all the way up and brace into place.
Take front bottom oil tube loose from motor/pump port.
remove filler plug and put in safe place.
Hang bucket underneath and run pump in up direction until it is out of fluid.
Unbrace engine and let gravity push out fliuid.
Reattach oil tube and refill with 30W non detergent motor oil.

Disregard any previous refernce to ISO32 hydraulic oil. It often causes bucking in "89 engines (fluid is too thin).

If you want to flush, then refill with mineral spirits. run system back and forth a few times and then drain again.

Run pump as if you want to tilt the motor up. Push button to raise motor. ps- Yes, fill is where you put the fluid in. Relax, you'll getter done.

So basically what he is saying that I need to lift the motor up manually and then use something to keep it in the full up position and then use the trim button to raise. That makes since now. Any suggestions on what to use to brace the motor? I do not see a lock anywhere on my motor to lock it in the up position?

2x4 cut to size? Broom handle? Out of work college kid? You're kind of fun. Oh, floor to lower unit as opposed to across across transom bracket.

Well wish I still was in college. I am sure you would get some laughs if I really asked all of the questions I wanted to but afraid to ask. I just started working on my own boat motor and I have no mechanical knowledge whatsoever. I do not see how that would work, the broom would sink into the ground or slide across concrete.

Use deductive reasoning:facepalm:Female:D My laugh at your expense. If the broom handle, 2x4, chairback, college kid sinks into the ground, put a platform between the ground and the object. Platform=plywood, corrugated panel, stepping stone. Gnight

Well I am glad I could make you laugh at my expense:rolleyes: I plan on flushing it with mineral spirits. Hopefully there is not damage and I can use for a little while longer but am sure I will need to replace or rebuild and Ritt will be the person I go too.
