Correct operating temp for a 470?

Just curious. Saw a thread a month or so back looking for solutions for running at low temps. Someone suggested a coolant res cap thermometer. My gauge has always (2 years) showed temp at 140-150'. Anyway, I got the cap and it looks like my actual running temp is 175-185'. Seems kind of high, but I'm not going to sweat it too much for now. Maybe check t-stat in the off-season.

Mine runs 140-150 all the time.
Id believe the gauge before the cap.

Mine runs at 160'F constantly, both on the dash gauge and on the rad cap.

The radiator cap gauge is a mechanical gauge, the dash is electical. I always thought mechanical to be more accurate than electrical but just looked it up on Autometer website and they advertise that both are equal in accuracy.

Obviously, one is wrong..

Either way the temp your at won't cause any issues.

Eric.

i figure if it has a functioning stock 165' t-stat (who knows?) then it should be at least that temp. i'd actually trust the new mech gauge over the electrical. guess i'll drop the mech in some boiling water to test...
so at what temp should i be concerned in a 470? i'd think that it should run at higher temps than a raw water cooled engine--more like car engine temps.

According to the "book" normal operating temperature is 165-200 degrees F. It has a 160 degree t-stat (open at 155-162 and fully open at 182). BTW my gauge never reads above 140, but am pretty sure that is reading low. In any case I keep a close eye on it.:D

And WHERE you measure the coolant temp has a lot to do with it. You could very well get two different readings; doesn't mean a prob.

well, the cap and temp sensor are both in the coolant res, should read the same. anyway, i'm not used to the boat running well--just waiting for the other shoe to drop :)
