I have been changing my own lower gearcase lube and have always lowered the motor till the little fins by the fill plug were level as well as the top of the cowling was also level. I read today that it should be in the upright position. Does that mean raised all the way up which would be at quite an angle.

Lowered to normal running position is correct. Whoever said "upright" must mean vertical. As in like a person standing up

Before somebody slams me, there are exceptons.

I drain mine with the motor in the down, normal running position, but tilt it up just enough so the drain hole is in the lowest possible position for best draining. Good Luck!

I think upright is referring to the relative position on the motor, as in straight up (vertical).

Tilted up is the complete opposite of upright, and I've never seen a L/U filled that way ever. It's always upright (tilted down) to drain and fill.

I think everyone is agreeing that what you have been doing is correct.
