Hey guys and gals, first boat as you will realize by type of question.
Was given a 19 foot 1992 Bayliner Classic, 1992 Mercruiser 3.0L (SN OD714746), Transom (SN OD671270). and Alpha 1 Gen II Outdrive (SN OD665768). The prop looks pretty beat up on the tips so I wanted to replace.

Finally got the engine running this week (did I mention it hadn't run in 4-5 years) so moving on to the Outdrive and prop.

Anyway, the question. How do I know what type, size, prop to replace the beat up one with? I have looked in the service manual but found nothing. I see, through the forums, a lot of questions about swapping props out, different pitch, different number of blades, but did not find a question on what to start with.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Your old prop should have numbers on it indicting "what" the prop is, look on the barrel or remove the prop nut and look underneath. This will let you know what the old prop was, but who knows if that prop is the best prop for your situation, there is no "right" prop for a 3.0 Mercruiser. Prop selection is based on usage, load, WOT RPM, etc.

If the boat ran well with the old prop you can most likely go back with the same pitch and diameter, if you want to improve the boat's performance, reply back with the info from the stickie at the top of this forum.

Thanks Fishrdan, I will take the prop off this weekend and try to discover what size and type it is. All the previous owner who gave me the boat could say was that it ran great and got up on plane beautifully. I hope all is true but was unaware about the prop. I think I will stick with what is currently on the boat as far as size and then determine the specs after I get it in the water for the first time. I will post back when I get more information.
Thanks again.

my 92 Bayliner owners manual has a line where the dealer writes in the original prop pitch. My 185 came with a 3.0 and had a 19P, so I suspect your original was a 17P if the boat was delivered near sea level.

edit 1851CB is the model of my boat
2250 pounds according to iboats, 2425 pounds according to Bayliner
the 1950 may be quite a bit lighter

Your Bayliner 195 actually weighs a little LESS than a 185.

I suspect it came with the 19" pitch. The 17" would make a good ski prop. ;)
