I recently purchased a 2005 Sun Tracker PB22 Regency Edition w/ Mercury 2-stroke 50 hp. I first posted a question on this boat about a month ago when there were some issues with the boat being able to accelerate properly. Carbs have been cleaned and those issues seem to have been worked-out. Now I am trying to address what I sense maybe an improperly sized prop for this motor/boat combination. If my tach is reading properly the boat seems to run fine up to around 4,000 RPM's and when proceeding above that up to where it tops out at 5200 RPMs it seems to have what I would call an un-natural sound and what feels like a low level vibration. It some times will smooth out, but I can't put my finger on the exact conditions to make this happen . . . be it from trim angle, water current, etc. Tomorrow I plan on pulling the prop to see if I can identify the specs on it, but I would also like to know what prop size would have been specified for this boat when it was sold new.
Also and this may be the problem with the vibration right here, but the previous owner had put those lift fins on the sides of the lower unit. I plan on pulling those off tomorrow when I am examining the prop. I had those on a ski boat once and I hated how they made the thing handle.
