Just installed a new prop on a 2007 25hp Mercury 4 stroke efi. Does anyone know the correct prop nut torque? Can you over-tighten? If so, will this cause vibration problems?

Re: Correct torque on prop nut

The idea obviously is to have your prop locked to the prop shaft with no play. 50 ft lbs (55 for my 90 per my service manual for reference) is a 2 x4 between the prop and the anti-vent plate and an 1 1/8" socket on the end of a 1/2" breakover bar and tightening till it gets moderately tight.

Since you engine is a 25, then the shaft and nut will be smaller and the appropriate torque lower. If you can't get a correct answer, go to the www and look up torque specs for different sized bolts and use that as a guide. Since your prop shaft is SS, and a lot stronger than a Grade 5 bolt, I'd use the numbers for a Grade 5 for the size that you have and not have another thought about it.

The nut isn't going anywhere. Either it has a cotter pin, locking tabs, or a nylon locking insert in the nut.

HTH,
