I have A 1977, 15hp Evinrude that seems to run very well but the coils look like they came up from the Titanic. I don't want to get standed a few miles from nowhere. Do these commonly quit suddenly or is that pretty rare?
Thank You.
Also do you think this Motor should put 3 people in a 10.5 ft inflatable with a fiberglass V hull (RIB) on a plane easily or no?

Re: Corroded coils (still work)

I've never actually seen the coils on those motors. That's a good thing since I maintain half a dozen of those motors at work. Any coil can fail, but those ones are pretty good. However, if they are in bad looking shape (what does everything else look like?!) I might be tempted to change them.

That motor should put you on plane. I plane soft bottom 12' zodiac's with two people plus gear (+400lbs) with the same motors (1980-90's). Easily, however, is subjective when it comes to an inflatable boat. They usually take longer to get on plane and need to be weighted forward. That shouldn't be a problem with three people. Of course, I'm not sure where you are going to put everyone in a 10' inflatable!

Really, I don't replace anything until it fails or looks like it will fail. If your motor is working fine then the only thing I might replace is the impeller if its over 5 years old.
