Corrosion - degradation on shiny surfaces

Noticed that several bezels have a damaged finish on the shiny surface.
As an example the VolvoPenta single lever control has a square bezel around it ... with a shiny chrome effect finish.
It's a plastic trim so its not chrome or stainless, same for the bezel on the dash guages. It has dotted and pitted 'corrosion' damage.
Does anybody have a treatment for it, any sanding or polishing is not going to work.

In that auto restoration world they have a chrome paint. Not the fake rattlecan stuff but a real 4 or 5 layer process but I bet it aint cheap. Can do black or red chrome colors too

Annoying this is the whole bezel and trim panel for teh VP control was replaced 2 years ago - certainly not standing up to very limited use. Boat has only done 75 Hrs and never moored.

Saltwater by chance?
Chrome, faux or real, is highly susceptible to saltwater corrosion. The chlorides destroy the protective chromium oxide layer, causing pitting and rust.
